4 Tips for Redecorating The Living Room
How much time would you save whenever you redecorated your home if you had an interior designer who would tell you just what to do to get the look and atmosphere you want?
More than actually doing the redecorating, deciding on what to do can be the biggest hurdle you need to jump.
Not surprisingly, the problem starts at the beginning. Where do you start to redecorate a room? Do you choose wall colours first? Or should you start with a living room suite? Or what about working around that Persian rug that’s been in the family forever?
While you’re the only one who can make the final decision, here are just a few tips to help you start and complete a successful living room redecorating project.
1. Find a Sofa
It’s the center of the universe for your living room. First, it’s likely the largest piece of furniture in the space. Second, it probably gets more use than any other piece. Whether you want to find a stand-alone ‘signature’ sofa, or get a complete living room suite, it’s a good place to start the project. If you’re happy with the sofa, the rest should fall into place around it.
2. Fill in the Colour Palette & Patterns
With the sofa in place, it will help give you direction for finishing the room. Different colours can create different moods and energy in the room, but they must fall in line with the colour and texture of the sofa. If you have a bold red leather sofa, you might want subtler greys or earth tones in the rest of the room.
The same is true for patterns and textures. A ‘busier’ sofa might call for more solids elsewhere.
3. Give it Balance
A single texture or colour is tough to carry throughout the room because there is nothing to balance or contrast it. The same is true for every other aspect of the décor. Look for balanced variety in the positioning of pieces, their sizes, and heights.
4. Light the Scene
When redecorating, we tend to imagine a room in full daylight, but you need to remember that you’ll use the room at night time too. You’ll appreciate the ability to have different lighting moods and purposes by having a variety of lighting, including pot lighting, table lamps, reading lamps and dimmer switches.
