5 Tips for a More Refined Decor Without ‘Re-Defining’ Your Budget
Like architectural voyeurs, many homeowners love to leaf through magazines and website just looking at all the beautiful home and interiors. They look so nice, comfortable, and, somehow, very elegant.
It’s a combination that most people assume is far too expensive for them. After all, it must take a stable of interior designers and the most expensive furniture, fabrics and accessories to make rooms look that good.
The interesting thing is, while anyone with enough money can buy expensive things, capturing ‘sophistication’ takes a bit of a knack. Yes, you can hire an interior designer, and yes, that will add significantly to budget. Or, you can check out the tips below to find out how you can elegantly decorate on a budget.
1. Hang ‘Em High
he curtains are one of the largest single visual features of your living room. As such, their look goes a long way to determining the overall ambience of a room. Height adds elegance. Instead of hanging the curtain rod just above the window, place it as high as it can go on the wall, while still leaving a few inches of ‘breathing room’ between the top of the curtain and the ceiling.
2. Become a Supporter of the Local Arts Scene
Alright, we don’t mean you have to wear headband and buy an all-new hipster wardrobe. But when it comes to the art you hang in your new livingroom, you are far more likely to strike and elegantly creative chord with original artworks versus those sold at Rona. And you’ll be able to support local artists for not that much more than the mass-produced stuff.
3. Size-Up Your Rugs
If each major piece of living room furniture doesn’t have at least two feet on your area rug, and your dining room rug doesn’t extend two to three feet behind each chair, then both are too small – and unrefined looking.
4. Less is More
Too much of even the most expensive furniture can look distinctly unsophisticated. Don’t buy living room sets that are too big for the room. And too many pieces creates clutter, not character.
5. The Right Lighting
Just like an elegant décor is made up of different ‘layers’, including furnishings, layout and balance, so too should lighting an upscale interior be done in layers. Instead of all table lamps, or all overhead lighting, the combination of floor lamps, table lamps and wall sconce lighting is an instant classic.
