3 Tips for Styling Your Coffee Table
Think of your living room or family room without any occasional tables, like your coffee table and end tables. It’s a stark vision, isn’t it? Not only do occasional tables and an interesting style element and balance to the room, but they also offer the practical functionality of having a place to put things.
The center piece of all your occasional tables is the coffee table. Despite it’s important roles of style and function, and the fact that it is literally at the centre of the room (everything else revolves around the coffee table), few people give it more than a ‘it fits with our décor’ kind of thought.
As its centre piece, your coffee table can help set the pace for, or at least tie together the style and décor of the entire room.
To help you get started here are a few tips for styling your coffee table.
1. Decide What You Want from Your Coffee Table
Basically, there are two ends of a spectrum between which the overall style of your table can fall. First is pure functionality with space for, well, coffee, magazines, flowers, electronics, etc.. Second is pure style, which might have an inspiring design, but not be so functional.
2. The One Thing Your Table Should Have
Even if you go for total functionality, or total style, always make sure to save some open space on your table. You’ll end up not appreciating even the most eclectic design, or the greatest functionality, if you don’t have an open spot to put down a drink.
3. Decorate It in Three Dimensions
As with any other part of the room and the overall space, varying the heights, widths and textures, of the things you keep on your coffee table helps to make things more interesting and engaging. For example, instead of having ornaments and other decorative items of generally the same shape and size, try combining a flower vase for height (especially with fresh flowers in it), a ceramic bowl for fruit or snacks, and a stack of books and/or magazines.
One of the best ways to capture the overall décor you want for the entire room is to pay close attention to each element. As the centrepiece of the room, your coffee table is a good place to start.
