Living Room Seating Ideas: How to Add More Seating
When it comes to living room seating ideas, our thoughts usually shift to the style, colour, patterns and textures of a living room furniture suite. While we know not to go with only a small sofa and recliner if we have a large family or entertain regularly, we don’t normally worry too much about how many actual seats we have for people.
But when you have guests over and you have to start grabbing bar stools and folding chairs, then, suddenly, living room seating options are the biggest home furnishing problem you have.
How to Add More Seating to Your Living Room
The easy answer is “add more seats’. But that can be impractical from the point of view of making your living room feel crowded when it’s empty; not to mention the added cost.
Here are just a few ideas to add more seating, without adding taking away too much from your living space, and bank account.
- Consider a Sectional with Chaise – Yes, buying larger furniture to accommodate more people is an obvious answer. However, not only will many sectionals give you seating for seven or eight people, but by concentrating so much seating capacity in one piece, versus sofas and chairs, you leave lots of open space to add even more seating, or just to keep your living room open.
- Choose a Dining Room Suite with Living Room Seating in Mind – If your dining room and living room are adjacents, consider a dining suite whose seats will fit into your living room design. When you arrange the living room, keep tables, plants or other accessories to a minimum on the dining room side of the room so you can quickly add more seats when needed.
- Add Benches & Ottomans – A bench can add stylish, compact seating options in front of a picture window. Ottomans can play many roles, from footrest to coffee table, and, of course, extra seating.
