How to Furnish a Small Room to Make if Feel Bigger
In our last blog post we talked about the problems of furnishing a big room. But the opposite can be just as difficult. If you live in a condo, townhouse or older home, smaller rooms might be all you have to deal with.
There’s nothing wrong with small rooms unless they start to feel too small and cramped. If you feel that you can’t move around a room without bumping into something or literally hitting a wall, some of the following tips can help you make the same room look and feel bigger.
1. Keep an Eye on Clutter
If there’s one thing that can make even a larger room feel too ‘close’, it’s clutter. From too many pieces of furniture, to curios on every table, and family photos on every wall, the more stuff you have in a room, the smaller it will feel.
2. Keep Everything in Balance
To get the idea here, think about what it would look like if you shoved everything in the room into one corner. Yes, there’d be lots of open space, but … well, you get the idea. How you arrange the tables, chairs, furniture accessories and even the wall hangings can make a big difference in how big and airy a room feels.
3. Shed a Little Light
Poor lighting can make the best interior décor seem dank. From throwing open the drapes in the day to having different levels of lighting to create different moods at night, a well-lit room feels larger.
4. Stay Away From Dark Colours
While light adds size, dark colours take away from it. You don’t have to make everything so white that you can’t find the sofa, but remember that the darker something is, the smaller it will make the room feel.
5. Un-Bulk Your Furniture
Sure, you never want to get out of your big comfy couch, but its sheer size can take away from how comfortable the room feels. Look for thinner, sleeker, yet still comfortable furniture.
A small room will never be big in dimensions, but you can help it feel bigger and make it a more enjoyable place to be.
