How to Furnish a New Home
Whether the home you bought is new or a resale, its new to you. Moving into a new home is a new beginning. Just like anything else you do, when you start something new, you don’t want to start it with something old. Including the furnishings for your new home.
But deciding to get new furniture for your new home is going to be just about the simplest question you’ll answer. After that, you’re going to be up against it. Not only is it difficult to decide on what to buy, or even a direction for your decor, but you’ve just come off of one of the most stressful parts of life.
Tips for Furnishing Your New Home
There are many schools of thought that tell you the best time to buy new furniture for your new home is before you move in. Then you can simply ditch the old stuff when you move and have the new furniture delivered to the new place.
But that adds a significant amount of extra work in the midst of the stress of moving. If you feel confident in choosing furniture and accessories, carpets, etc., that will work for your new home, then go for it.
If you’re at all concerned about buying furniture that might not work, then it’s not as bad as you think to wait until later, after you move in, to buy your home furnishings. Yes, you’ll be facing all the unpacking and settling in, but you’ll be much less stressed than in the midst of your move. And getting rid of the old stuff remains the same task anyway.
That said, here are a few tips for finding the right furniture styles for your new home.
1. One Step at a Time
Again, if you’re confident that you can put it all together at once then go ahead. But very often it’s difficult to know how something you see on the showroom floor or online will look in your home. So maybe you can start with something that is in your colour scheme, or a piece that you really love. Once it’s in place, if it looks like it can work, you can move onto the the next pieces of furniture.
2. Keep All the Steps in Mind
Yes, you might start with a sofa set in the living room. But, as much as possible, take into consideration the other elements you’ll be adding later on. What type of lighting will work with the great sofa you found. Or, if you’re planning to finally put together that gallery of wall art you’ve always wanted, will the busy pattern of the couch clash with it?
3. Let Your Imagination Go
OK, we’re not talking about creating a décor worthy of an abstract artist. But one of the benefits of wiping the slate clean is the opportunity to try something different with your furniture. You’ll probably be more satisfied with the results than if you go with the tried and true.
4. Prepare Yourself
Especially if you have a somewhat different vision, it can be difficult to fill in the pieces. You may not be able to find just the right pieces – even after you’ve looked at thousands. Don’t get intimidated, don’t give up. Keep looking for options and don’t be afraid to get the design help you need.
5. Remember the Important Role of Furniture Accessories
When You’re furnishing an entire room or house, you tend to think in larger elements, like the dinging set, or bedroom suite. That can lead you to take steps with those pieces to accomplish something that those pieces weren’t necessarily meant to do.
For example, you might want to have a splash of colour and decide on a funky fuschia sofa. Except your entire room will glow in fuchsia when the sun shines or when you put on the lamps at night. Would a some fuschia throw pillows accomplish the effect you were hoping for, without causing fuschia blindness?
