Don’t Make These Living Room Furniture Layout Mistakes
If there are two guiding principles that lead to a well-laid out living room, they are: have a focal point, like a coffee table, and create a balance among all the pieces of furniture and accessories.
With that in mind, check out the following mistakes to avoid.
- Going With Form Over Function – Maybe you just have to have that side table. Or you collect antique cabinets. But your living room is a place for relaxation, entertaining and conversation. If the style of the side tables puts things off balance, or one more cabinet turns the room into a museum more than a living space, then the room can’t fulfill its role.
- Blocking Windows – From reaching them to let in air, to enjoying natural light, windows should be accessible and clear. If you must put a sofa or table in front of them, try the leave a gap between the furniture and the window.
- Not Paying Attention to Traffic Flow – Every entry point to you living room must be wide open. Especially in small rooms, it may be tempting to use whatever space you have, but make sure it’s easy to access and get around the room, or it will be that much less inviting.
- Not Having Enough Separation of Elements – When furniture is too crowded together or you don’t know where the living room ends and the dining room begins, it can make the space feel confusing. Have enough space between pieces to let them “breath” and try using area rugs to help separate the living and dining areas.
