How to Make a House a Home

  • Blog

Whether it’s a house, or a condo, or a walk-up, it’s your new home. But, still, moving into a new place doesn’t usually feel like moving ‘home’.

Even if you’ve taken steps before moving in, like painting and/or buying new furniture, to make the place feels more like yours, somehow none of it seems to do the trick.

Of course, no one should expect anywhere to instantly feel homey, but, in some cases, it can take so long for a place to feel comfortable to you that you move out before it ever really does.

To help speed up the process of turning a new house into a place you can truly call home, try some of the following when you furnish and decorate it:

1. Tell Your Story

What are your interests, hobbies and passions? What’s your favourite colour? Where have you been? The décor of your new place should tell your story. Considering that people have different chapters in their lives, decorating with your story as a theme might get a little unruly. But go with it, you’ll discover a balance; a mix of styles, colours and textures that work, for you and your guests.

2. Celebrate the Imperfections

When your interior design is by the book, it looks great, but doesn’t necessarily feel that way. Furnish for comfort, decorate for inspiration. When you do, it won’t be picture-perfect, but it’ll feel more like home.

3. Let There Be Light

More than making a room look bigger, brightness illuminates your décor and brings energy into any room it fills. If you prefer a ‘cave’ and decorate that way, it will always be a cave. If you decorate for light, at least you can have things bright during the day, if you ever want a change, and still have the cave at night.

4. It Really is All About You

Your home is the only place that feels like home to you. And you are the only one who needs to feel at home there. If you decorate to impress others, you’ll let yourself down.

You can take your time. Each step you take is an enjoyable one. Even if you put up just one meaningful picture, you’re one step closer to home.
