Affordable Ways to Give Your Décor that Interior Designer Look

  • Tips

With the summer coming to an end and more time being spent at home, many of us are starting to think about redecorating or at least updating our home’s décor. Hiring a professional to give your home a facelift can be costly, which is why knowing how to DIY an affordable interior design is beneficial.

There are many ways to do tackle interior design. New living room or bedroom furniture would certainly help. But, if you’re looking for more affordable ways to get similar results, read on.

3 Practical Ideas to Update Your Interior Design

One of the best and most inexpensive ways to change the look and feel of your décor is with a fresh coat of paint. But, while very helpful, you don’t get that “complete makeover” look from new wall colours. Here are a few other ideas to give your home an “interior designer” look.

  1. Lighting – This may be one of the most powerful, yet under-used, interior design tools around. Many people make the mistake of choosing their lighting options based only on the design of the lighting fixture. While that’s important, it’s also crucial to think about the actual lighting the fixture offers.

As we head into the cooler months, you’ll probably be using interior lighting more often than not. Make sure it has the versatility to be practical, like for reading, and also set a mood, like for a candle-lit dinner.
  2. Choose a Signature Accent Piece – You may already have one and not know it. But, even if you need to find one, it can be as simple as a single accent table, accent chair, or area rug. The idea is to find a piece of furniture that stands out from the rest, either in colour, texture or design, that offers a focal point, or accent the rest of your décor.
  3. Get Bold with Accessories – Maybe it’s a sculpture, an antique piece, or a plant. In any case, choose accessories that will stand out in your décor, versus blending in.
