Home Furniture & Décor Trends that are So Over

  • Trends

Whether you’re a boomer who’s downsizing, or you’re just investing in your first home, you’ll remember some home furniture and décor trends that are no longer with us. It could be the shag carpets of the 1970s, wallpaper borders in the 1980s or torchiere lamps in the 1990s. What once seemed like fresh and exciting trends can now make you wonder what we were all thinking.

These Trends May be the Shag Carpet of the 2010s

Pity the unfortunate person who did their entire home in wallpaper borders the day before they went out of style. In our efforts to save you from a similar fate, we thought we’d scour the internet for home furniture and décor trends that are over.

  1. Barn Doors – Whew! You can stop wondering what anyone ever saw in them. They offered little privacy, never kept out much sound, and were cumbersome to use. And did anyone ever install a barn door that really fit with the furniture and décor of the house?
  2. Shades of Gray – Using shades of gray for everything in a room, including the sofa and area rug, is no longer with us. That is not to say that gray is out as a colour for any particular piece, but only to contrast more colourful or patterned pieces.
  3. The Open Concept Kitchen – This one worked for many people. If you entertain a lot, those who hang out in an open-concept kitchen are still with the rest of the party. But even if you really like the open concept, you still can remember loads of times where you hated having to rush to clean up the dishes when someone called to say they’re coming over. Even being able to see the dirty dishes while trying to relax in the living room can be stressful.
  4. Media Rooms – When Netflix first appeared, with their HD and digital sound, a media room seemed like a great way to imitate the theatre experience without the $15 tickets. But you never needed to clean up the theatre, or have the kids running around you while you’re trying to enjoy the Batman soundtrack. In the end, the rooms of your home should be decorated and furnished with everyone who uses them in mind. If not, no one might use them – like your media room.
