3 Unconventional Furniture and Décor Ideas for Small Spaces
We’ve given you lots of décor and furniture ideas for small spaces before. But, as house prices continue to go up in Toronto, we thought you might like a few more.
This time, we thought we’d give it a little twist. The ideas we’ve offered in the past, like thinking “vertically”, and using multi-function furniture, like bedroom furniture with storage drawers under the bed, made instant sense.
But the ideas below might seem to be the complete opposite of what you would normally think is right for decorating a smaller space. Until you read them.
Unconventional Furniture and Décor Ideas for Small Spaces
Before you decorate a small living room or bedroom, check out these ideas that might go against the conventional wisdom of furnishing small rooms.
- Think Big – The conventional wisdom is: small space means small furniture. Of course, if the bedroom in your new condo just can’t handle a king-size bed, then you shouldn’t go king-sized. But not every piece has to be Barbie-sized either. If you have space for a larger armoire in the room after you drop down to a queen-size bed, then it will give you more storage space, which might be at a premium in a small space.
- Go Bold – The conventional wisdom is: light colours make the space look bigger. That’s true, but it doesn’t mean you have to give up entirely on making bold statements with your décor. In fact, if you choose a lighter palette for a small room, painting an accent in a darker or bolder colour can give the room added dimension, and make it look even bigger.
- Use Your Windows – Sometimes you get so hung up on finding furniture and décor to make a tight space feel bigger that you forget about window coverings. Especially in apartment condos with sliding glass doors, the window area can take up a higher percentage of the overall area of a small room. Don’t underestimate that opportunity to find a fabric and style to support, or even dictate, the overall look and feel of the room.
