4 Tips to Furnish an Off-Campus Student Room
If you’re heading back to uni this fall for your second year or later, there’s probably a furniture move in your near future. Getting out of tiny res rooms is a welcome relief – and you’ll have the entire bedroom to yourself!
Whether you’re in a shared-accommodation house or you managed to get your own apartment, you’re going to need some bedroom furniture. While a lot of it will come from what’s hanging around your parent’s house, or be handed down from friends or family who’ve just graduated, you’ll probably need to buy some new stuff to fill in the gaps.
Here are a few pieces to think about for the bedroom.
051. Beds with Storage
While space won’t be slim as in res, you can never have too many storage spaces. It makes your room roomier. You have to have a bed anyway, so you might as well get one with storage underneath.
2. Mirrors
Even if you have a vanity with a mirror, a full-length mirror behind your door is a great way to make sure that, yes, you are indeed ready to head out for the night. And decorative mirrors on the wall can help make a tinier room feel brighter and bigger.
3. Area Rugs
If there’s one thing you might not want as a ‘hand-me-down’ it’s some else’s rug. And you might want something to cover up any carpeting that’s already in the room. Getting your own area rug is a fairly cheap way to really make the room ‘yours’ and to make cold floors that much warmer in winter.
4. Lighting
Especially if you’re sharing a house or apartment, there’ll be times when you hang out with your own friends and you can’t use the living room or basement. So your bedroom needs the lighting options to be a place to study, sleep and entertain. The lamps you choose have a lot of responsibility.
Again, particularly when you’re sharing a house, your room will be the only place you can be alone. Make sure the furniture in it is just the way you like it.
