How to Clean Leather Furniture When it Gets Sticky
No one buys leather furniture for just any reason. It’s usually a very deliberate purchase made by someone who wants to enjoy leather’s rich feel and how it influences a room’s décor. All of which makes it even more distressing when one day they sit on their leather couch and realize that it’s all sticky. Now they need to know how to clean leather furniture without ruining it.
5 Steps to Clean Leather Furniture
Leather furniture can get sticky over time due to the build-up of cleaners, polishes, dust, dirt and spills. Contrary to popular belief, it’s relatively easy to clean leather in most cases, including getting rid of the stickiness. You may even be able to use a homemade cleaning solution instead of a commercial leather cleaner. Here are the steps to follow, using a leather sofa as an example.
- Vacuum the Couch – Using the brush attachment on your vacuum cleaner, vacuum the surface of the couch. Then remove the seating cushions and vacuum the base of the couch.
- Mix Your Homemade Cleaning Solution – Add one tablespoon of dish soap to a quart of water. Done.
- Dampen a Cloth & Start Cleaning – Submerge a clean soft cloth into the solution and wring it dry. A microfiber cloth can help you in tougher situations. Wipe the surface of the furniture using circular motions. You may need to go over the stickier spots more than once. If you need to clean grooves and creases, use a cotton swab dipped in the solution.
- Wipe Off the Cleaning Solution – Dip another clean cloth into plain water, wring it out and wipe the cleaning solution off the couch.
- Dry the Furniture – Use a clean dry cloth to wipe the entire surface of the couch and make sure no damp spots remain.
So the next time you visit the furniture store, you don’t have to shy away from the leather furniture you’ve always wanted because you think it’s too difficult to clean.
