How to Save Money When Refurnishing
It would be nice if, every few years, you could just say “out with the old, in with the new” and refurnish your living room, bedroom or family room by simply changing everything in them and getting all new stuff.
OK, back to reality.
Us mere mortals have budgets. But we still want our décor to look its best. So how do we do that? One way is to choose where to spend your budget and where to save some of it. In other words, while no one will fault you for getting a good quality area rug or leather couch, do you really need to splurge on everything?
3 Things You Can Economize on When Refurnishing
First, it’s never a good idea to buy cheap, low-quality furniture. We’ve told you before about how low-cost furniture can be the most expensive. Second, at the other end of the scale, we all have our favourite things and maybe some of the items below are a “must-binge” for you. But they are generally things from which you can get the same enjoyment, and perhaps higher value, from lower-cost options.
- Artwork – One surefire way to set your décor apart from the rest is to splurge on a $25 million Picasso original. Or, you could keep $24,999,900 in your pocket and find a piece that’s almost as compelling. Yes, it’s an extreme example, but don’t think you have to spend a lot to enjoy a piece of art.
- Decorative Accents – Having a signature piece for your coffee table is a great way to express your personality in the décor of the room, but you’re not going to get the same inspiration and reward from having museum-quality pieces everywhere. You may be surprised at how much something less expensive moves you without the price tag.
- Dinnerware & Stemware – Yes, you need a set of fine china for fine dinners. But you don’t need to replace it every time you refurnish. In addition to saving money, you’ll save handwashing and replacing expensive pieces when they break if you choose less expensive options. A curious thing about dinnerware and stemware is that the more durable options, those that don’t chip and can be thrown into the dishwasher, are often the least expensive. But they still look great on your table in a beautiful setting.
