How to Match a Sofa to Your Room Décor
It’s probably the biggest piece of furniture in your living room or family room. As such, your sofa has a huge impact on the overall look and feel of the space. Unfortunately, if you don’t properly match a new sofa to your room’s décor, the whole room might never feel just right.
3 ways to Match Your Sofa to a Room’s Décor
Here are some easy guidelines to follow to help your sofa complement the rest of the room.
- Brightly Coloured Sofas – A popular trend is to make the sofa a standout focal point of the room by choosing bright colours for it, like red, chartreuse or sky blue. But if other elements in the room, like an area rug, compete for attention with the sofa, not only will the sofa not be the focal point, the entire décor can feel busy or confused.
For brightly coloured sofas, other elements in the room, like drapes, should be of more muted tones. Use an ivory or other light colour for walls to create a “middle tone” between the sofa and everything else in the room. - Light Beige or Gray Sofas – If you pick a sofa that is a more neutral tone, it helps to keep that neutrality across everything else in the room. To add interest and depth to the entire room, try adding pieces with distinctive patterns and/or textures in off-whites and taupes.
- Brown & Black Sofas – brown and black are popular colours for sofas and they may offer the most freedom in decorating the rest of the room. You can help- the sofa standout by using neutral tones and textures elsewhere, or balance the colour of the sofa with complementary colours for other pieces, tied together with neutral wall and/are flooring colours.
